Why altitude matters for volleyball
Colorado's tournament venues sit between 5,000 and 6,500 feet above sea level. At these elevations, the air contains roughly 17% less oxygen than at sea level. For a volleyball athlete doing repeated sprints, jumps, and explosive movements across a multi-match day, that oxygen deficit translates directly into faster fatigue, longer recovery between points, and potentially reduced performance in late sets.
This is not a Colorado-specific problem — it's a physics problem. Any athlete competing at altitude for the first time will notice it. The good news: the effects are manageable with straightforward preparation, and most athletes adapt enough to compete effectively within 12 to 24 hours of arrival.
What athletes actually experience
The first thing most visiting athletes notice is getting winded faster. A warmup that feels routine at home may feel harder than expected. By the second or third rally of a long set, the athlete may notice they need an extra beat to recover before the next play. This is normal at altitude and does not indicate a fitness problem.
Other common altitude effects: mild headache (usually from dehydration, not altitude sickness), dry mouth and throat (Colorado's air is very dry year-round), chapped lips, and increased urination frequency (the body adjusts fluid balance at elevation). Serious altitude sickness — nausea, dizziness, confusion — is extremely rare at Front Range elevations and more associated with mountain elevations above 8,000 feet.
Colorado-based athletes are fully adapted and won't experience these effects. The conversation about altitude is specifically for families traveling from lower-elevation regions — coastal cities, the Midwest, the Southeast.
Hydration: the strategy that actually works
The single most effective altitude preparation is pre-hydration. Starting 48 hours before the tournament, your athlete should increase water intake significantly — aim for half their body weight in ounces per day (a 120-pound athlete should target 60 ounces daily, minimum) starting two days out.
During the tournament, hydration needs increase beyond what your athlete is used to at home. The combination of altitude, dry air, and physical exertion creates a fluid deficit that can accumulate across a multi-match day. Visible sweating may be less than at a humid sea-level venue, which misleads athletes into thinking they're losing less fluid. They're not — the sweat evaporates faster in dry air.
Water alone is adequate for matches under 60 minutes. For tournament days with multiple matches, add an electrolyte drink — Gatorade, Liquid IV, LMNT, or similar — to replace the sodium and potassium lost through sweat. A 50/50 mix of water and electrolyte drink between matches is a practical approach.
The simplest test: urine color. Pale yellow means adequately hydrated. Dark yellow means the athlete needs to drink more. Check at the first restroom visit of the day and adjust from there.
What parents should watch for
Monitor your athlete for signs of significant dehydration: complaints of headache that persist after drinking water, visible decline in energy between matches (beyond normal fatigue), muscle cramping, or unusual irritability. These symptoms are all correctable with fluid and rest — but they require you to notice them and respond, because athletes in competition mode often push through rather than self-reporting.
The most common mistake visiting families make is not starting hydration early enough. Drinking a lot of water on tournament morning doesn't make up for two dry days of travel. The 48-hour pre-hydration window is the recommendation because the body needs time to reach optimal fluid balance — chugging water at 7 a.m. produces bathroom trips, not cellular hydration.
Parents feel altitude too. You'll notice it walking the venue, climbing bleachers, and by mid-afternoon if you haven't been drinking water yourself. Pack a refillable water bottle and use it. The dry air affects everyone, not just the athletes.
Skin and lip care in dry air
Colorado's low humidity — often below 20% in winter — dries out skin and lips noticeably, especially for visitors from humid climates. By Day 2 of a tournament weekend, your athlete may have chapped lips, dry hands, and irritated skin around the nose.
Pack lip balm (ideally with SPF for any time outdoors), a basic moisturizer, and saline nasal spray if your athlete tends toward dry sinuses. These are small items that make a measurable difference in comfort across a two-day event. Most tournament families from humid regions wish they'd packed them by Sunday morning.
