The club volleyball calendar
Club volleyball operates on a roughly November-through-June calendar in most US regions, with some variation by geography and division level. The year breaks into three phases: tryouts, the training/regular tournament season, and championship season.
Tryouts typically happen in November and December for the season that begins in January. Some clubs hold additional tryout rounds in January for athletes who missed the first window or for spots that opened. After tryouts, teams are finalized and training begins in earnest.
Tournament season: January through April
The regular tournament season runs from January through April for most clubs. Teams compete in regional tournaments — often one or two per month — to develop, improve seeding, and accumulate points or bids for championship events. These are the weekends families plan their lives around: early Saturday mornings, full days at large sports complexes, occasional overnight travel for events that draw teams from multiple states.
Most regional tournaments are single-day events. Some are multi-day. Your club will publish a schedule at the start of the season — it's usually set by late December — so you can plan around the dates that are non-negotiable for your family.
Qualifier tournaments and bids
For teams competing at the national or open level, the season includes at least one Qualifier tournament. Qualifiers are sanctioned events where teams can earn bids to USA Volleyball's Junior National Championships or other national-level competition. Bids are typically awarded to the top finishers in each age division.
Not every team pursues a national bid, and not every club enters its teams in Qualifiers. Regional clubs focused on development rather than national competition may skip Qualifiers entirely and focus on local events. Both approaches are valid depending on the athlete's age, goals, and family commitment level.
Championship season: May and June
May and June are championship season. Regional championships, state championships, and national championships all fall in this window. For teams that haven't qualified for nationals, the regional and state championships are the season's signature events.
Junior Nationals — if your team has qualified — typically runs in late June in one of a handful of destination host cities. It's the largest indoor volleyball event in the country for youth players, with hundreds of teams across dozens of age and division brackets. The experience is memorable regardless of results.
After nationals or the end of the regional championship season, club volleyball pauses. Some clubs run summer programs, open gym, and conditioning. The formal competitive season ends, and families have a window to recover before tryouts begin again in November.
